It was the Battle of Gettysburg that Colonel Colvill of Red Wing, Minnesota, led the charge of the 1st Minnesota Regiment at the Plum Run, saving the Union Army from being split in two on July 3rd, the second day of the battle. It is well known by many as the charge that saved the Union. Colvill was wounded twice while engaged in the charge. The regiment suffered 82% casualties.
